British Airways Business Class Upperdeck

Having worked in travel for many years, including working for British Airways and then tour operators I have been rather fortunate in having been able to fly business a few times, an experience I could not afford otherwise, but even though I had been able to go in business I still had the dream of climbing those stairs on the plane – yes, the ones that go to that fabled happy place. It looks like an exciting place, what is up there? Why can’t I go up there? You get the feeling that it is a special party area or something, and I guess in some ways that is true!
Having in my past though worked for Air Miles had accrued a silly number of miles and decided I would use the for our honeymoon so that we could fly out to our honeymoon in business class Upperdeck!

Now we must start by admitting this cost a good many miles and that was pretty much the end of my Air Miles balance and sadly could only go one direction, but that said it was a great experience. For those that may not have experienced club world, that is a whole experience in itself, the great amount of space and for me the ability to lie down. I had been before in what BA called the cradle seat which is what they had before the flat bed, but those days went by quick thankfully and the flat bed arrived. My first experience of the flat bed was the first time I have EVER slept on a plane for more than 5 minutes and once woken up been able to move. It feels great although I must admit to have the space But and this is a BIG BUT I must say it is not worth an extra £2,000 or so per seat, even if I was loaded I think I would struggle with that……but it is nice

Along came the 1st September and our honeymoon arrived, we got to go in the club lounge (which is over rated) and then on board, and finally I got to climb those stairs…..

I was not sure what I was expecting but it was not what I went up to. If you look at a plane from the outside that has the bubble in the top where these seats are located then you could actually imagine what kind of experience that it is. It was fantastic though, the thing I had not allowed for of course is that if you are at the top of the plane then the width of the compartment and the low roof was a surprise, of course looking back it makes sense but it was not initially. It was really nice though as it meant there was such a feeling of space once you were in your seat. The seat layout is 2 seats either side of the aisle but what gives you the feeling of the space is that between the seat by the window and the actual window is about a foot of space where the rook arches down. This gives such a feeling of space. Also as there is no more than 7 rows this meant there were no many of you up there and so it was so much quieter, it was like being in a private place almost as there was no rabble!!! Let us not also forget some of the nice extras with business such as the “raid the larder” where basically you can go and help yourself to snacks and drinks, this again is the most basic of ideas but makes life a lot more comfortable as well as giving you a good reason to get up and walk around this private section of the plane.

If I got the chance to travel business again I would DEFINATELY try and get the seats upstairs as it is again a totally different flying experience and a FANTASTIC way to start your holiday to the best place in the world!!
