Have to try a batting cage

Something I have always thought was amazingly American was this fascination with batting cages. For those are not aware of what I mean, I am sure you have seen on in a movie, normally at a father and son bonding moment in the movie. Now I appreciate that baseball is an American sport and so of course it is American but name me another sport that does this, you don’t see cricket bat versions, or football (soccer) cages where you can go and thump some balls around!
Baseball cages though are a good place to vent as well for those that remember playing similar sports when they were younger (I am in this group), this is a great chance to pull some muscles and hurt yourself. In case you have not seen these cages then they are basically a cage that you stand it, but your quarters in a pay box to the side and then baseballs are thrown by a machine at the speed that you have set. The speed is the fun bit as you can change the setting from peewee (little kids baseball) to pro style which is about 100mph.
Being the tough guys that we are, we all will at some point crank it up to the top setting and take some swings. After looking embarrassing in your lack of ability to hit it you may get lucky and hit the ball, this is the point at which you find hitting a ball that is moving at that speed hurts!
Batting cages are a good laugh and as much as I jest it is a nice father thing to do where you, the father, pretend to know what you are talking about help your son/daughter to try and at least make contact with the ball rather than “knock it out of the park!” we all hope that they will make at least one good connection so that they feel they have done well!
