This was a something that caught out my father on his first every holiday to Florida with the full family. We were a party of 5 adults and 1 child on a holiday that had been planned to the minutest detail as we were all so excited as this was our first trip to Florida and it was the place I had always wanted to go to. We had booked the holiday as a package deal (not much internet back then, that is why I started this site) and so we had flights, a villa for us all and 2 Rental Free Cars.  That was good news obviously as it meant we had all the main elements ticked off except for the tickets for entrances, but as we had booked through a company for the villa we did not know which villa, or even which estate etc… A shock was on the way.
Having had our 10 hour flight we all bundled off, went through a rather disorganised security process to be allowed into the country (it is a lot better now although it was our first glimpse of everyone having hand guns on their belts). We collected our bags after what felt like and eternity and then finally got to walk out into the Florida sunshine, it was lovely. So over we went to the car hire section to collect our 2 cars, whilst the ladies looked after the bags (or sat in the sun would be a more accurate description) the men as hunter gatherers went for the cars. The guy went through explaining the types of cars and where they would be found, and could he take a card for security and pay bill. What bill my father asked as I have a free rental cars, no you don’t came the reply you have rental free cars. The difference between “Free Rental Cars” and “Rental Free Cars” was just over $1,000 which was local tax, fees and insurance as the whilst there may not have been a rental charge there WAS no insurance either and that of course is mandatory.
My father at this point would normally have staged a “sit in” in disgust or similar but accepted he was going to get nowhere with this and really his grudge was with the tour operator, this was a large expense that had not been allowed for and sadly took the pleasure off the start of the holiday and was mentioned many times later but the power of the mouse eventually took over. But we warn one and all to be careful of such wording, and we promise you will not find anything similar on our website.
