Ron Jon’s Surf Shop, Cocoa Beach and The Proposal

Most people going to Florida will have heard the name ‘Ron Jon’s Surf Shop’ on Cocoa Beach. Now I am not a surfer chic or even a beach babe but I was keen to take a trip to this famous shop. It is about an hours journey from Orlando which my boyfriend and I undertook in a convertible in the burning Florida sunshine! It was a dream car with dream weather until we both started to realise we were starting to feel a bit ill from the amount of sun constantly on us so we had to make an emergency stop for liquid and ice cream refreshments!! Much better.

Arriving at Ron Jon’s it looked pretty much how I imagined it would, maybe slightly smaller. Lots of surf boards and palm trees on the outside and the same on the inside! If you are into surfing and the beach culture then you will find anything you could possibly want at this shop. And if you aren’t then it is a great shop to look around anyway. Swim wear of every possible variety, surf boards, more flip flops than you can shake a stick at and a range of clothing that I wasn’t exactly sure what it’s purpose was! The staff are as you would expect them to be ‘dude’. Looking fresh from the waves with ridiculous tans but genuinely nice people. My boyfriend and I spent quite a time walking around looking at the merchandise until I was instructed by my boyfriend to look at the sunglasses as he wanted a new pair. I was surprised and rather pleased that he trusted my judgement that much so I dutifully looked at the racks of sunglasses narrowing down the possible front runners. Having found the top three pairs I was suddenly ushered out of the shop by said boyfriend saying that actually he didn’t think he needed new glasses after all! Slightly odd but I figured he had just realised that he was infact shopping which is against his very nature!

Ron Jon’s is right on Cocoa Beach so when said boyfriend suggested a walk on the beach we left the car in the car park and strolled onto the perfect white sandy beach to let the sand run through the toes apparently. Cocoa Beach won’t dissapoint all beach lovers. It is gorgeous and very empty! I can’t say that this will be the case always but it certainly was when we walked along it. A paradise moment walking hand in hand along the waters edge. We sat down on the soft sand watching the waves when my boyfriend turns to me and asked me to marry him! Talk about the perfect setting in the most perfect place in the world. I said yes of course and he presented me with a blue dolphin ring that he had purchased in Ron Jon’s Surf Shop not an hour before. Now the reason for the search for sunglasses mission became clear! A decoy while he brought a ring! The memory of it all still brings a huge smile to my face and of course any thoughts of Ron Jon’s or Cocoa Beach are fantastic ones.

I was in fact given my actual engagement ring when we returned to our villa that day but I still have the dolphin ring that I got on that perfect beach. I would hugely recommend a trip to Ron Jon’s and Cocoa Beach and for me it will always be a special place. I went there with my boyfriend and returned with my fiance (now my husband of 10 years!).
