To Bump or Not To Bump – Florida as a Mum to Be

It’s too hot! It’s too much walking! I can’t go on anything! These maybe some of the thoughts that come to your mind if you thought about the idea of going on holiday to Orlando whilst pregnant. Having ‘Been there done that’ as they say when i was 5 1/2 months pregnant i can say that i enjoyed my trip just as much as the times I have been without the bump.

Being sensible is probably the key to a happy trip whilst pregnant. Firstly, the flight. 8-9 hours is a pretty long time on a plane at the best of time but when accomodating a bump as well it can be a bit daunting. I found that as long as I got up and moved around regularly, drank plenty of water (this actually helps with the getting up and down regularly as I kept needing to visit the ladies!) and wore the very attractive flight socks I didn’t have any issues at all. One tip is that it is very handy to have a wonderful husband with you who will run up and down the plane chasing your 2 year old!! Takes the pressure off!!

When it came to going round the parks, having a bump did not take away any of the enjoyment. We went in March so the weather was nice and warm but not scorching. At the end of the day, anything inside is air-conditioned and outside there is enough shade and fans etc for it not to be an issue. Whether this would become an issue if you went in July/August time I don’t know but Florida is so used to the heat that every where is set up so well. There is certainly a lot of walking involved but there are also benches, cafes, rest areas everywhere so you are never far from somewhere to rest your legs and get a drink.  Now for the rides. Yes you are restricted on the rides that you can go on (although the warning signs only ever ‘recommend’ that expectant mothers do not ride so if you really wanted to you could i suppose). Most of the kids rides are fine such as ‘It’s a Small World’, ‘Winnie the Pooh’, ‘Peter Pan Flight’ etc and of course you can watch all the shows, parades, characters as normal. There is so much to just see and do in Disney, apart from the huge rides, that I didn’t feel I had missed out at all.  Saying that I am a complete wuss when it comes to roller coasters so I wouldn’t have gone on them anyway!!! Having been there several times without kids this holiday was all about our 2 year old so it was a more low key holiday whiched worked well with the bump. It goes without saying that loos etc are everywhere so there is no danger of being caught short!!

Food was varied and plentiful so I guess whatever cravings you were having they would be easily catered for. As this is America you can have pretty much any choice of so many things that you can always find something suitable. I never had any problems with food, apart from eating far too much!!!

My last tip would be don’t forget to take your pregnancy notes with you just in case. If you did need to visit a doctor for any reason it would make it a lot easier to have them to hand. Thankfully I didn’t need them but it was peace of mind to know they were there. Also don’t forget you can’t fly after 26 weeks unless you have a doctor’s note!!

I would always recommend Florida as a holiday for anyone at anytime and going when you are pregnant really is as simple as ABC!! I have amazing memories of being there with a bump and I can tell my, now, 3 year old son that he has been to Disney World, it was just a bit dark!!!!
