Florida has many public holiday days that are a complete mystery to those of us that don’t live there. I remember going to Florida at the beginning of September expecting the queues at Disney to be dramatically less than in the summer (as they usually are in September) but only to discover the Magic Kingdom was
heaving with people! We had no clue why there were so many people there in what we thought was the off season. It was only later that day that we found out the reason…it was ‘Labor Day’ weekend!!! Not something we knew anything about but apparently quite a big deal over there!!
Below are the following state holidays that Florida observe:
New Year’s Day – January 1st
Martin Luther King Jr Day – 3rd Monday in January
President’s Day – 3rd Monday in February
Memorial Day – Last Monday in May
Independence Day – July 4th
Labor Day – 1st Monday in September
Columbus Day – 2nd Monday in October
Veteran’s Day – November 11th
Thanksgiving Day – 4th Thursday in November
Election Day – Tuesday following the 1st Monday in November (held every 4 years)
Christmas Day – December 25th
It is quite handy to have a note of these dates especially if they fall within your visit. They would not in any way make a difference to when we go to Florida but it is worth a thought that places like Disney World will be very busy (imagine Bank holiday weekends over here and times it by about a million!!).
