When you start thinking of good things to do in Florida, one of my top 3 is Blizzard Beach. When you are looking for something to do in the Sunshine where you can still mix a fun themed day out with water then the place to head for is Blizzard Beach. The first time I went to Florida this was the place I was most looking forward to going to, where else would you have a water park in the sunshine with themeing that makes the park appears as if a Ski Resort. Disney say that the park was created when:
After a freak snow storm blanketed Florida in white, a ski resort sprang up with slalom courses, toboggan slides and iceberg walkways. When the weather shifted back to hot, the whole resort started to melt. What to do?
An enterprising alligator saw an opportunity. Clad in a scarf and hat, the gator slid down the ski jump, shouting “Yahoooo!” all the way. With a big splash he landed in a pool of melted snow below the mountain, and the slushy, slippery slopes became an exhilarating water park like no other in the world.
The parks has a large wave pool in the middle along with a number of slides and rides to entertain those that still need some thrill. The most well known water ride being the Summit Plummet. To get to the top of the ride you can have a work out with climbing the stairs or, as this is a ski resort, you can take the chair lift! The Summit Plummet at Blizzard Beach is a 12 story drop high speed slide. If you look at the picture to the right it starts at the highest point, goes through the ski jump and appears at the bottom! At a total length of 360 feet and possibly peaking at 60 mph (In A Swim Suit) this is not one for the faint hearted.
For the kids at the other end of the spectrum there is the toddlers section called Tikes Peak that is for kids of no more than 48 inches which is a great little space for them to place in peace whilst those needing a bit more thrill or deeper water can wander off. Tikes Peak offer a couple of slides, that to a small child, are perfectly safe but look really big for them to go down. With this being Disney it has been well thought out with there being gentle steps for kids to fall down, shallow water to run around in, some spraying hoses and it is next to a lovely beach (or in their eyes – sand pit) and there is also an area that is under cover and so when it is time to eat of the kids need time out or even a sleep in a  pushchair then they can.
With loads of other rides including Toboggan Racers giving you a chance to race up to 7 other fellow downhill experts, or run off rapids for the bigger kids and parents to sit in a raft and charge down one of 3 slide routes and for those that are just wanting a quiet time of it there is a great lazy river where you can sit on a tube (takes some practice to get onto it though!) and zoom along at 3 or 4 miles an hour watching the world go buy and trying to avoid the occasional spraying hose!
If you like the water in any way shape or form – This is a MUST!!!
